What is Geographic Information System (GIS)?

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a decision support system that enables operations such as collecting, storing, updating, controlling, analyzing and displaying information about the earth for a specific purpose.

What is GIS? – What does it mean?

GIS is the English equivalent of Geographic Information System.

GIS History

The applications made in the field of GIS and the beginning of GIS were firstly Charles Picquet’s mapping of the cholera epidemic in the 48 districts of Paris in 1832, and then in 1854, the British Doctor John Snow created a map on the same principle to show the increasing deaths due to cholera in London, and spatially determined the epidemic. It is in the form of identifying the source and preventing the problem.

The concept of GIS was first introduced in the early 1960s and was researched and developed as a new discipline in the following years. Roger Tomlinson commissioned by the Canadian government to create a manageable inventory of natural resources.

He considered using computers to combine all of Canada’s natural resource data and created the automated computing system to store and process large volumes of data that prompted Canada’s national land use management program to begin.

GIS History

He called this system GIS. Roger Tomlinson’s work to initiate, plan and develop the Canadian Geographic Information System culminated in the first computerized GIS in 1963.

This process was followed by commercial desktop software released from the early 80s. Today, there have been great developments in web and mobile platforms in Geographic Information System and Technologies, especially depending on the developments in computer technology. CBS has become widespread in the Turkish market in the 1990s, especially with desktop GIS programs after Windows 95. After 2000, corporate GIS systems started to spread.

What are GIS Components?

Geographic Information System consist of five components that can be described as the inseparable links of the chain. GIS components; hardware, software, people, data and purpose.

donanim-ico

Hardware: Devices such as computers, tablets, GPS to be used for GIS operations.

Software: It is the GIS software that will process, query and analyze information.

Human: Humans make up GIS users. Geographic Information Systems have limited competence without people who manage the system and data, analyze, update and plan to use it.

Data: The most important component produced or supplied for use in GIS operations.

Purpose: These are the systematic plans made for a specific outcome in GIS operations.

What are GIS Data Types?

There are three types of data in GIS. These are vector data, raster data, and non-geographic feature data.

Vector data model; It stores objects consisting of points, lines and areas with x and y values according to a certain coordinate system. It is extremely easy to locate spatial objects by finding coordinate information.

Raster data model; It is formed when images are divided into small pieces and adjacent cells are grouped together. Each cell is called a pixel. Cell size determines resolution. The smaller the cell size, the higher the map resolution will be.

Non-geographic attribute data is information that reveals the properties of any object that does not have a map.

GIS Data Types

Creating a GIS Database

A database is the medium in which data is stored and stored. GIS data models to be used while creating a database in GIS should be stored in a suitable structure, in a certain order, and should be efficient, quickly accessible and easily manageable. The database is an important component of Geographic Information System and gains value by using it effectively.

Database Management System (DataBase Management System)

Database Management System is a system that enables users to access, manage, report and view the database in corporate applications. With the development of technology, database management systems have also gained geographical features.

What Does GIS Do?

Geographic Information System add geographical features to the data and enable analysis that cannot be done otherwise.

What is Geographical Query?

A geographic query includes queries between graphical (location-based) data and verbal (attribute) data. Verbal information can be displayed by selecting the point, line and area objects on the map by querying over graphical data. For example, address or parcel information can be displayed spatially by querying the attribute information with operations such as address and parcel query. Queries can be made on a single layer or more detailed by associating multiple layers with each other.

Queries such as in, containing, intersecting, non-intersecting, not in, touching, staying in a certain buffer area can be given as examples.

What Do GIS Maps Mean?

GIS digital maps can be easily shaped for the purpose or analysis needed according to geographical or non-geographical data.

Different types of maps can be produced with various data layers in GIS. GIS maps are used especially for visualizing and displaying the analyzes and studies on the screen or for printing. With smart cartography, updating the data on the map, adding and removing new data can be done more easily.

  • • GIS maps are used to compare the effects of human activity on nature.
  • • It is used to predict settlements that will be damaged in natural disasters or to identify and visualize risky areas.
  • • Information such as the average income of a particular region, book sales or the number of votes can be correlated. In fact, presentations and analyzes can be made by creating thematic maps from these data. You can take a look at examples of thematic maps on our “Başarsoft’s Informative Maps” page.
  • • GIS maps can be used to show information about numbers and density. For example, it can be shown how many doctors are in a given area compared to the population.
  • • With GIS technology, the change of many events over time can be revealed. Comparative maps can be created to examine issues such as the advance or retreat of ice cover in polar regions and how this event has changed over time.
  • • Location information of the working area can be displayed with GIS maps.
  • • It is used to determine the cadastral land value, borders, ownership and characteristics in a certain region, and to keep and manage records about its legal status.

What Are the Benefits of GIS? – What Does It Do?

Geographical Information System is a tool used in every situation related to space, in explaining the spatial relations of events and in decision-making processes by reaching the result.

Geographic Information System enable better decision making, geographic record keeping, geographic management, and reduced cost of operating at high efficiency.

Usage Areas of Geographic Information System

With the development of computer technology, Geographic Information System are used for tracking, planning and analysis in many professions and business lines.

All data taken into the computer environment are associated with each other and with their geographical locations, and spatial analyzes can be made with these data. Geographic Information Systems play an important role in the analysis of spatial data, cartography, infrastructure/superstructure systems and solutions in order to develop more effective planning and management practices, to make fast and on-site decisions, and to provide better services by reducing costs.

GIS is used in all projects that contain addresses, coordinates, parcels or inventory in the public and private sectors.

GIS Applications

Geographic Information System is not limited to the creation of maps, but offers many more capabilities to its users with various software developed specifically for the application area. Due to its advantages, GIS is expanding rapidly by finding new application areas day by day and is used for different purposes.

Various GIS applications are created by means of related software in line with the needs and demands of public and private sector organizations. GIS software companies working in this field have become able to develop GIS applications on mobile devices as well as desktop and web applications, depending on the rapid advances in the world of technology. In particular, the increase in the use of mobile devices and the fact that they are easily portable and accessible allow the applications developed in this environment to increase and become widespread day by day. The suitability of the applications for their intended use, making healthy analyzes and being easy/flexible to use are among the main criteria for GIS applications.
