What is LiDAR?

LiDAR, is a remote sensing technology based on the method of calculating the distance between the starting point and the object by utilizing the time it takes for the rays sent to the surrounding objects to hit and return to the starting point starting from a starting point. Basically, it increases the information obtained about the object by keeping the light reflection values of the objects in addition to the distance measurement.

What is the definition of the LiDAR?

The Word of the LiDAR definition stands for “Light Detection and Ranging“. In addition, in some sources, they express the  LiDAR as the words of “Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging”.

What is the scanner of the LiDAR?

A LiDAR technology consists of three main components: scanner, laser and GPS. It is a highly preferred remote sensing method to measure the clear distance of an object on the ground. LiDAR produces data by obtaining information through various browsers in parallel with the progress of technology.

What is LiDAR Sensor?

LiDAR Sensor is the technology that detects and attain the return of the transmitted ray from the object. Today, with the diversity in the usage areas of the LiDAR, Its sensors are also used in different areas ,the size and type of the sensors vary according to the purpose of use. Vehicles, robot vacuums, phones, drones are examples of areas where different LiDAR sensors are used.

How the LiDAR Data Is Generated?

LiDAR measures the distance by using the reflectance times and reflectance values of the rays reflected from a certain place by hitting the objects. With this process, it produces point cloud data by collecting x, y, z information of the earth together with distance measurement via LiDAR and can model it in 3D.

One of the important criteria while collecting data is to choose the right sensor and scanner. Radar technology, which is a classical method preferred before the LiDAR method, produces data using radio waves. In addition, cameras, which are another preferred method, require the environment to be bright and infrared light.

The LiDAR method, on the other hand, can produce data without being dependent on these factors and consuming less energy. LiDAR, which has an incredible speed measurement feature, can collect millions of point data per second. Because of this, today it is one of the most preferred remote sensing methods.

What Does The LiDAR Drone Do?

By using drones, data related to the work area can be obtained without going anywhere. It is one of the most preferred methods to collect data about dangerous places that people cannot reach normally.

As a result of the combination of drones, which are especially popular today, with LiDAR technology is produced high-resolution 3D modeling of a region. It can collect information about objects on earth by quickly creating point cloud data of any area. Agriculture, forest, historical ruins, city, mining are examples of areas where LiDAR drones are used.

What Is The LiDAR Mapping?

Through the x and y coordinate information in the point cloud data collected via LiDAR for modelling the work area, each point is placed in the correct positions on the earth. After this process, a map is created by modeling the earth using the z value of the LiDAR data. On the created map, not only the topography of the earth, but also the vegetation, structures, cars, etc. elements on the topography can be modeled with high resolution. 3D models of surfaces can be created with centimeter or even millimeter details. In addition, information that affects visuality such as RGB (Red, Green, Blue) can be included in surface modeling maps created using LiDAR data.

LiDAR Program – LiDAR Applications

There are different programs to process LiDAR data and make it ready for use and perform various analyzes. Geographic Information Systems, which have been used in almost every field, can model the earth in 3D and make various analyzes using LiDAR data. By using LiDAR data, Canopy analyze of vegetation, roads, buildings or topography of the study area can be extracted in seconds and.  You can choose MapInfo Pro program, which we distribute, to perform various analyzes with your LiDAR data.

Uses of The LiDAR

Some of the major uses of LiDAR data are:

  • — 3D Modeling
  • — Surface Analysis
  • — Digital Terrain Model (SAM)
  • Digital Elevation Model (DEM)
  • — Classification processes
  • — Length, area and volume calculations
  • — Transportation Planning
  • — Archaeology
  • — Agriculture & Forestry
